Biography

The Maltese tenor Nico Darmanin is revered for his interpretation of roles in the Bel Canto repertoire. Having performed at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Opera National de Bordeaux, Glyndebourne, Welsh National Opera, Scottish Opera, Estonia National Opera, Opera Vlaanderen, the Wexford Opera Festival and the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro. 

 

Nico has performed some well know roles such as Conte Almaviva (Welsh National Opera, Opera Holland Park), Don Ramiro (The Grange Festival, Scottish Opera), Italian Tenor in Rosenkavalier and Don Ottavio (Opera Vlaanderen), Belfiore in Il Viaggio a Reims (Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro) Don Ottavio (Nederlandse Reisopera), Comte Ory (Dorset Opera Festival), Mergy (Wexford Festival), Osiride (Chelsea Opera), Alberto (Salzburger Landestheater) and Ernesto (Welsh National Opera). In 2014 Nico won the Overseas prize in the Royal Overseas League Competition and soon after in 2015 he represented Malta in the Cardiff Singer of the World, International Competition!

In 2020 Nico was nominated for 'Best supporting Role' at the prestigious Austrian Music Theater Awards 2020 - Österreichischer Musiktheaterpreis 2020 for his interpretation of the role of Alberto in Rossini's 'La Gazzetta' for the Salzburger Landestheater. A role that has raised numerous international reviews and praise.

 

His discography includes world premiere recordings of songs by Massenet and Sullivan's Shore and Sea, collaborating with Maestro Richard Bonynge himself. He has appeared in recitals in the US and Canada and Washington. In concert Nico has sung the roles of Rodolfo in 'La Boheme' in concert for Kensington Symphony Orchestra, Osiride in Rossini's 'Mosé in Egitto' and Nicias in Massenet’s 'Thais' at the Cadogan Hall for Chelsea Opera Group.

 

Last season Nico returned to The Grange Festival to sing one of his loved roles, Don Ramiro in 'La Cenerentola' conducted by David Parry and soon after returned to sing Conte Almaviva for the Welsh National Opera.

In the last two years Nico has had numerous important debuts, such as, Rodrigo in Rossini's 'Otello' for the Manoel Theatre Malta. Romeo in Gounod's 'Romeo et Juliette' for the Estonian National Opera.  Alfredo in Verdi's 'La Traviata' for Opera de Limoges.

This season, Nico had the opportunity to make new theatre debuts. Opera National de Bordeaux in the role of Raimbaud by Meyebeer Conducted by Marc Minkowski.  Opera de Limoges in the role of Alfredo. Opera de Dijon in the role of Ernesto. And finally a summer Festival debut at Buxton Opera Festival in the exciting role of Uberto in Rossini's 'La Donna del Lago'. Soon after Nico will return to the role of Alfredo at Opera North, and soon after to sing Il Conte Almaviva at the Opéra national de Lorraine.
